For long simulation times especially, Trotter sequences either grow deep, or errors become significant enough, making NISQ applications hard. Translational invariant systems have symmetries that can be exploited in the creation of quantum simulation circuits: these are often interesting in physical applications, but simulating them is not always straightforward.

In this paper, the authors study the generalizability of optimized Trotter formulas to larger systems and provide numerical simulations for open and periodic boundary systems in one and two dimensions. Upscaling to larger systems can be thought of “gluing” translated circuits together. Pushing the boundaries of simulation time per circuit depth paves the way to quantum simulation experiments when the number of operating gates is decisive for the algorithm to work, thus adding another asset to the NISQ toolbox.
