Can Quantum Computing contribute to a sustainable development? Prof. Michael J. Hartmann, director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics II tackled this big question last thursday as part of the series of public lectures “Naturwissenschaften und Nachhaltigkeit”. As  expectations for the use of quantum computers in the near future are most often unrealisticly high, Prof. Hartmann’s words are carefully chosen. He explains that improvements in the resource cost of calculations but also new insights in material science and quantum chemistry can contribute – if used responsibly – to a sustainable development. A recording of his talk is available at the FAU video portal.
