In our latest pre-print, we introduce a variational algorithm for Hamiltonian simulation. As quantum optimization faces fundamental problem when performed on a quantum machine, we studied optimization on a classical computer. As opposed to prior work, the presented algorithm is applicable to any local Hamiltonian and does not require symmetry constraints. The authors show that Trotter sequences can always be improved and support previous numerical results on the scaling of the error in system size and simulation time.
