Sick leave
The most important information can be found here (German only):
If you are getting sick, please inform Michael (Anja in CC) as soon as possible.
Regulations stipulate, that the information has to be given until the start of the next workday at the latest. So, for example, if you feel sick in the morning, please call or write a short mail that morning.
Please do not forget to put Anja in CC since there is mandatory paperwork associated with sick leave.
An official sick note (“Krankschreibung” or “Gelber Zettel” in German) is necessary after the third calendar day.
Here are a few examples as to what exactly this rule means:
- An employee is sick as of Tuesday. He must notify the chair of his illness on that day. He does not have to submit a medical certificate until Friday.
- If an employee falls ill on Friday and is sick up to and including Monday, then he must submit the medical certificate on Monday.
- An employee falls ill on Friday and returns as healthy on the following Monday. He does not have to present a medical certificate on Monday.
- The employee becomes ill from Wednesday. He returns to work on Monday. Since it is assumed that he was already healthy again on the weekend, he does not have to present a medical certificate.
One part of a doctors sick note (“Arbeitgeber”) has to be sent to Anja until the fourth day of being sick at the latest. If you are sick longer, send the scan in advance and the original by mail. If you are sick for just a few days, just send a scan to Anja and put it in her mailbox when you are back.
The part of the sick note that is for the insurance (Versicherung) has to be sent as soon as possible to the health insurance. Please do not forget this. With many health insurances, this can be done online. If you do not do this and, for example, a simple cold turns into pneumonia, forgetting to inform your insurance on time can cost you sick pay.
If the incapacity for work lasts longer than stated in the doctor’s sick note, a new sick note is required.
If you are well again, please inform Michael (and Anja CC) as soon as possible that you are back to work.
